Departments and Programs
The School of Arts and Humanities is comprised of six academic departments, the Institute of Arts and Humanities with 17 academic and writing programs, the Institute for Practical Ethics, and three centers: the Center for Hellenic Studies, the Center for Taiwan Studies and the Suraj Israni Center for Cinematic Arts.
We are committed to serving the campus community, as well as the greater San Diego community, with diverse offerings that push boundaries, challenge expectations, and drive innovation.
6 Academic Departments
- The School has three departments in the arts — Music, Theatre and Dance, and Visual Arts — and three departments in the humanities — History, Literature and Philosophy.
2 Institutes
- The Institute of Arts and Humanities was formed in 2016 to house programs that were previously dispersed among different School's on campus. It operates similar to a department in that it oversees many different academic programs that offer majors and/or minors.
- The Institute of Practical Ethics was formed in 2018 as an interdisciplinary research unit to develop and promote research on ethical issues facing the public. It does not offer majors or minors, and instead operates mainly as a hub for promoting research and hosting events.
2 Centers
- The Center for Taiwan Studies, founded in 2021, aims to expand cultural understanding of Taiwan by supporting research and connecting communities with diverse events and programming. It does not currently provide academic coursework or offer majors/minors.
- The Suraj Israni Center for Cinematic Arts, founded in 2021, promotes research, scholarship, teaching, production, and exhibition of film and moving-image arts. It does not currently offer majors or minors under its name, but collaborates with other existing film and media programs on campus.
1 Program
- The Analytical Writing Program offers a range of lower and upper division writing courses to help students master the critical thinking, reading, and writing skills that they will use at the university and in their professional lives.
