UC San Diego’s Division of Arts and Humanities was founded as an innovative and inclusive environment for artists and scholars. Diversity is essential to our core mission. From admissions to curriculum design, recruitment of diverse faculty, and outreach to high schools and community non-profits, we constantly seek new ways to educate a wide spectrum of students who will have an important impact in the world.

During UC San Diego's 2013 Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action and Diversity Awards ceremony, the division was named "Community Champion" for its High School Outreach Program and outstanding efforts in furthering the spirit of diversity, equal opportunity and affirmative action at UC San Diego.

In 2011-12, the division enhanced the position of faculty equity officer to an associate dean for equity, diversity and inclusion. The new office has ensured that issues of diversity are central in all divisional discussions. It has also enabled the division to provide hiring workshops to its constituent departments and to offer professional development to young faculty and graduate students. Going forward, new mentorship and outreach projects – for faculty and students, as well as underserved members of the greater San Diego community – will continue to show that diversity is not about “being” but “doing.”

The Division of Arts and Humanities has been and remains a campus leader on diversity.
