Noteworthy Alumni

 

Award-winning alumna and artist Carrie Mae Weems is one of the UC San Diego 2017 Alumni Honorees. See what she had to say in a video interview when she was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2013. Weems is joined by fellow arts and humanities alumna Rachel Axler, an Emmy Award-winning television writer and playwright who is also a 2017 Alumni Honoree.

Theatre alum Ricardo Chavira makes stage debut as lead in The Motherf**ker with the Hat at London's National Lyttelton Theatre. This London production runs through August 20 directed by Indhu Rubasingham, whom Chavira referred to in his BBC interview as “the best director he’s ever worked with.”


Ann ThorvaldsdottirComposer and music alumna Anna Thorvaldsdottir has been named by the New York Philharmonic as the Kravis Emerging Composer. "Anna has one of the most unique and expressive voices in the compositional scene today," says the Philharmonic's Music Director Alan Gilbert.


Wong Fu ProductionsVisual Arts (2006) Alumni Philip Wang, Wesley Chan and Ted Fu, who together run Wong Fu Productions, were recognized "Emerging Leaders" during the 2015 Alumni Weekend Celebration. An interview was also held (YouTube) before the event, "A Conversation with Wong Fu Productions."


Paloma YoungNew York Times featured alumna and award-winning costume designer Paloma Young about her next project "Permission," a dark comedy by Robert Askins. It posed a design challenge like none she had ever experienced.


BreweryUC San Diego alumni are involved in the booming craft beer industry in San Diego from production to marketing. A toast for our humanities graduates Anthony Chen (AleSmith), Yuseff Cherney (Ballast Point) and George Thornton (Homebrewer).
